Gastroenterology (GI) focuses on digestion and issues of the digestive system. We provide services including but not limited to colonoscopies, EGDs, endoscopies, and GI ultrasounds. In gastroenterology, imaging plays a key role in diagnosing conditions. The following are some common imaging techniques used in the GI Department:

• Endoscopy. An endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure in which a flexible tube called an endoscope is used to examine parts of the digestive tract. A light and camera are attached to the endoscope, allowing doctors to see color images of the digestive tract.
• Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Also referred to as an upper GI endoscopy, an EGD is used to view the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
• Colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is also a form of endoscopy. However, the endoscope enters the body through the rectum in order to view the large intestine (colon).
• GI ultrasound. Also called an abdominal ultrasound, the procedure uses sound waves to produce images of the internal organs. Ultrasounds are safe, painless, and non-invasive, and capture images in real time.
